Canaan Smith digs deep and enlists Grammy-winning Emily Weisband for personal new single ‘Diamond on the Dresser

Listen to ‘Diamond on the Dresser’ now

Williamsburg, Virginia native Canaan Smith shares one of his most personal tracks to date with the release of new single ‘Diamond on the Dresser’ featuring Grammy-winning songwriter and singer Emily Weisband, is out now via ONErpm.

Digging deep, Smith wrote the song with James McNair and he produced the track himself. Over his career to date, Smith has seen how his fans connect to his more stripped-back and personal songs, and ‘Diamond on the Dresser’ is his most soul-baring since ‘Bronco’, the title track from his 2015 debut album.

“The subject of ‘Diamond on the Dresser’ hits close to home as I have family members struggling with alcohol addiction. There have been many instances where it has impacted on me and my family, which is why this is such a personal song for me to share,” explains Smith. “I hope I can shed light on this tough subject and raise awareness for anyone else going through a similar situation, and that this song is a wake-up call for whoever needs it.”

‘Diamond on the Dresser’ marks the first time Smith has recorded a collaboration with a female artist sharing vocals. Speaking about putting her vocals on the track Weisband says:

“I was writing with McNair and Canaan and they played me this song they’d written together… I had chills, it just felt classic and sincere. It reminded me of a modern-day ‘Whiskey Lullaby’. When he asked me weeks later to sing it with him I was just really honored that he thought I could add something to it!”

Smith adds, “It was so cool to get a reaction like that from such a fantastic songwriter and it validated my belief that this song is something special. I’d envisioned the song as a duet so it was a no-brainer to ask Emily to put her vocals on. The end result surpasses my hopes and expectations.”

‘Diamond on the Dresser’ is Smith’s third release since embarking on his path as an independent artist in 2022. It’s the follow-up to last year’s ‘Heartbreak Heaven’ and this year’s ‘Down in Flames’, which picked up support from Apple Music.

Canaan performed at The Kelley Bros’ ‘Sticks and Strings’ charity concert

On November 20, Canaan was invited to perform at The Kelley Brothers’ ‘Sticks and Strings’ concert.

The evening kicked off with an acoustic set from The Kelley Brothers – John, Josh and Charles Kelley – followed by stand-up from Henry Cho and a Celebrity Jam hosted by Patrick Davis & His Midnight Choir.

The Celebrity Jam saw Canaan perform in a line-up that included all three Kelley Bros, Darius Rucker, Randy Houser, Ed Roland of Collective Soul, Garrett Hedlund, Eric Paslay, and Joe Stevenson.

Proceeds from the event benefited charities in three areas that were major influences in The Kelly Brothers’ lives: golf (First Tee – Augusta), music (12 Bands of Christmas) and healthcare (The John W. Kelley, M.D., Cardiovascular Endowment at the Piedmont Augusta Foundation).

Canaan Smith heads to the honky-tonk with new song ‘Heartbreak Heaven’

Williamsburg, Virginia native Canaan Smith digs further into his country roots and takes fans to the honky-tonk with new song ‘Heartbreak Heaven’.

Written by Canaan Smith, Brandon Kinney and Chris Loocke; produced by Smith, ‘Heartbreak Heaven’ was mixed by Dave Clauss and mastered by Andrew Ayan. It's a witty take on an age-old story: the first place love goes when it dies. Smith seems to feel right at home in this honky tonk as he sings, ‘Raise a little hell where there ain't no pain / At the paradise where hearts will learn hard lessons/ A little place called Heartbreak Heaven’.

“It’s was one of my favorite songs to hear back after recording it because it has such a distinctive feel. The groove of the song… I just love that kind of music. Honky-tonk 2.0 is what it feels like to me… a big thick bass and a live band,” shares Smith. “It’s not all lined up and tuned up, on purpose. I wanted it to sound like I pictured ‘Heartbreak Heaven’ the bar to look and it belong in that setting. I pulled from all my honky-tonk traditions and made it something I felt could be evergreen for anyone who is a fan of bonafide country.”

The song is Smith’s first new material since the release of his critically acclaimed 2021 album ‘High Country Sound’, and it marks his first release as an independent artist. Taking full control of his career, Smith is making music that is true to his artistry as he realises his full potential as a vocalist and a songwriter.

‘Heartbreak Heaven’ is just a taste of things to come with plans for more new music to be released over the coming months.

Canaan’s upcoming live shows are:

December 30th – Uncommon, The Unveiling – Folsom, CA (Buy tickets)

January 21st – The Fox – Hays KS (Buy tickets)

NEW ALBUM, 'HIGH COUNTRY SOUND,' OUT 4/2! "SWEET VIRGINIA OUT NOW!

Canaan Smith returns with his own “solidly country” (MusicRow) style, as he announces the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album, HIGH COUNTRY SOUND (Round Here Records), out April 2. Fans can preorder beginning today (3/19).

“This whole album felt like a chance to make something that I truly wanted, which was extremely liberating – but also nerve-racking because I became the one responsible for the project,” Smith explains. “I really focused on having fun with it, and I didn’t feel pressure from anyone to do anything in particular – it all came from a place of my own personal love for these songs. Taking control and kind of steering the project in the way I wanted just made the outcome that much more special, and I couldn’t be prouder of it.”

Serving as the long-awaited follow-up to Smith’s critically acclaimed debut album, BRONCO (2015), and marking his first major release under Round Here Records, HIGH COUNTRY SOUND showcases a new and unexpected side of the Virginia native. Returning to his roots for backwoods inspiration, the 12-track project features everything from bluegrass-tinged, swampy singalongs like “Catch Me If You Can” featuring Brent Cobb to raw, lyrically driven ballads including “Like I Ain’t Missin’ You,” with each tune peeling back a different layer on what he refers to as “Canaan Country.”

Wanting to make an album that truly reflects who he is as an artist, Smith made sure to have his hands in all parts of the creation process – making his debut as sole producer on eight of the 12 tracks, while coproducing the rest of the set alongside Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley. As a writer, his credit is on every single song on the project.

Previewing HIGH COUNTRY SOUND, Smith is sharing one of his favorite tracks off the project today (3/19) – “Sweet Virginia” – available across all streaming platforms and digital retailers. The reflective tune’s meaning is two-fold for Smith, both serving as an ode to his home state and also to the light of his life, his one-year-old daughter Virginia Rose. This new tune is the latest in a line of other teases from the upcoming album, including Smith’s critically acclaimed anthem “Colder Than You,” “Cabin In The Woods” and “Mason Jars & Fireflies.”

Bringing the HIGH COUNTRY SOUND release to the next level, Smith has partnered up with the Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau to debut the new project with an intimate, acoustic performance, presented by Ole Smoky Moonshine, in Gatlinburg, TN, on April 1. Although the entire show will be livestreamed across the Visit Gatlinburg social platforms, a small group of local fans will be able to join the socially-distanced event by applying for tickets HERE. Mason Jars & Fireflies - Out Now!

Six more weeks of winter may be on the way, but Round Here Records’ PLATINUM-hitmaker Canaan Smith is delivering an early dose of summertime vibes with his brand-new song, “Mason Jars & Fireflies” – available across all streaming platforms and digital retailers today (2/5).

The swampy singalong, which Smith produced himself and cowrote with Florida Georgia Line's Brian Kelley alongside Corey Crowder, sets the stage for the perfect summer night under the stars. Heading off the beaten path to a mountaintop in the middle of nowhere, the rowdy, toe-tapping tune calls out to the unforgettable memories made with friends when the sun begins to set on a hot day – and the “Mason Jars & Fireflies” finally come out to play.

"More than anything, writing and producing this song just inspired me so much on a musical level. As the sole producer on the track, I was able to really make it my own, and I had a blast doing so,” Smith explains. “There’s so much energy in this song, with the hillbilly stomp-clap beat, and I can’t get enough of it. To me, it just sounds like a memory – running wild as a kid in Virginia, any of those coming-of-age stories that you never forget. In my mind, this song is the soundtrack to those moments.”

Mason Jars & Fireflies” is the latest introduction to Smith’s new musical chapter, as he continues to channel his Virginia roots and dig deeper into the signature sound that he refers to as “Canaan Country.” This release follows his standout 2020 releases – “Cabin In The Woods” – a “rustic track [that] transports listeners far away from the modern rat race” (Sounds Like Nashville) and “Colder Than You” – a “solidly country” (MusicRow) and “deliberately stripped down” (Rolling Stone) tune that highlights Smith’s “raw tone”(Billboard).

When it comes to new music in 2021, this is just the beginning for Smith, so be on the lookout for an exciting announcement in the coming weeks about what he’s been working on.

CMT Video Premiere of "Cabin In The Woods"

Round Here Records’ PLATINUM-hitmaker Canaan Smith is kicking off the new year by bringing his latest reflective tune, “Cabin In The Woods,” to life in a brand-new video – watch the exclusive world premiere on CMT, CMT Music, and CMT.com.

WATCH THE VIDEO PREMIERE FOR CABIN IN THE WOODS

Serving as Smith’s co-directing debut alongside Kurt Ozan, the stunning clip was shot in McEwen, Tennessee, and perfectly follows the lyrics of Smith’s rootsy, midtempo tune, as it takes fans on a visual trip down memory lane to a backwoods hideaway – a place that Smith couldn’t get enough of.

“The whole filming process was a blast,” Smith explains. “I feel most at home when I’m out in the middle of nowhere, just enjoying nature – and that’s exactly what we did. Plus, since this was my first time co-directing, it was that much more exciting for me. I hope fans enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Co-produced by Smith alongside Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, and written by Smith, Kelley, Josh Miller and David Garcia, “Cabin In The Woods” is the latest introduction to Smith’s new musical chapter and has continued to garner praise since its release, with Sounds Like Nashvillehailing, “the rustic track transports listeners far away from the modern rat race.” Continuing to channel his Virginia roots, the track follows “Colder Than You” – a “solidly country” (MusicRow), “deliberately stripped down” (Rolling Stone) tune that highlights Smith’s “raw tone” (Billboard) and serves as a “slow grooving, tear-in-your-beer waltz for the modern era” (Sounds Like Nashville).

And this is just the beginning, as Smith is set to roll out a brand-new project in the coming months.

New Song - Cabin In The Woods - Out Now!

Just in time for fall, Round Here Records’ PLATINUM-hitmaker Canaan Smith is escaping to a “Cabin In the Woods” with his rustic, new rocker releasing today across all streaming platforms and digital retailers.

Co-produced by Smith alongside Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, and written by Smith, Kelley, Josh Miller and David Garcia, the easygoing mid-tempo is steeped in timeless comfort... and the relaxed feel of getting back on nature’s schedule.

Beginning with the sound of birds chirping and the echo of acoustic guitar, steel guitar and fiddle, it finds Smith reminiscing on a simple, forest hideaway that sits at the center of his character, while carrying the message that some things are the same as they’ve always been – regardless of what may be going on around us.

LISTEN TO “CABIN IN THE WOODS” HERE

“I love music that makes me feel something, and this one definitely puts me in a place of nostalgia,” Smith explains. “I’ve made some of my favorite memories out in the woods, and this opportunity to put music out that reflects what I love is what’s most important to me right now. I hope everyone enjoys listening to it as much as I did making it.”

Cabin in the Woods” is the latest introduction to Smith’s new musical chapter. Continuing to channel his Virginia roots, the track follows “Colder than You” – a “solidly country” (MusicRow) and “deliberately stripped down” (Rolling Stone) tune that has garnered praise from fans and critics alike since its summer release, with Billboard highlighting his “raw tone” and Sounds Like Nashville hailing the song as a “slow grooving, tear-in-your-beer waltz for the modern era.”

Upping the ante, Smith recently launched The Dock Sessions with a soulful version of “Colder than You.” This original video series brings viewers down to the water for never-before-seen, acoustic performances of his new releases, fan-favorites and songs that have inspired him.

But this is just the beginning, as Smith is set to roll out a new project at the top of next year.

"Colder Than You" Official Music Video Watch Now!

Watch the “Colder Than You” Official Music Video HERE.

Round Here Records’ PLATINUM-hitmaker CANAAN SMITH bottles up bygones with a homemade heartbreak remedy in his brand-new video for “Colder Than You” out today.

Serving as the perfect visual for Smith’s “solidly country” (MusicRow) track, the clip highlights the Virginia native’s love for the great outdoors alongside his drink of choice – a nice, cold beer. Directed by Kurt Ozan, the video finds Smith creek-side in northern Georgia’s stretch of the Blue Ridge Mountains, brewing and bottling what he describes as “beer-shine,” while singing along to the twangy backcountry-infused anthem – and rumor has it that Smith might have something new brewing off-camera as well.

Co-produced by Smith alongside Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, and written by Smith, Corey Crowder and Jared Mullins, the mid-tempo track tells the story of a man who lost his lover and finds solace in a 12-pack of cold ones – with Billboard raving, “From the moment it opens with an impersonal note on the refrigerator door, ‘Colder Than You’ pairs two familiar country themes — a broken heart and a potent swig of alcohol — praising the latter for its frosty refreshment and zinging the woman behind the former for her icy disposition.”

New Single - Colder Than You - Out Now!

Round Here Records’ PLATINUM hitmaker CANAAN SMITH washes down goodbye with his brand-new single, “Colder Than You” – available on all streaming platforms, digital retailers, and hitting the Country radio airwaves today (6/8).

Co-produced by Smith alongside Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line and written by Smith, Corey Crowder and Jared Mullins, the mid-tempo track puts a twangy twist on heartbreak, as it tells the story of a man who lost his lover. Instead of letting it get the best of him, he manages to find solace in a 12-pack of cold ones, singing, “Girl, I ain’t drowning your memory / These mountains are all that’s in here gettin’ blue / Baby, I mighta finally found something colder than you.

LISTEN TO “COLDER THAN YOU” HERE.

“We wrote ‘Colder Than You’ a little over a year ago, and I just kept coming back to it,” Smith explains. “To me, this song leads with its lyrics, and as a songwriter, that’s something I always look for. I love the clever wordplay – I’ve always been a sucker for that – and I’m just really proud of how country it feels, overall. Hope everyone who’s been in a bad breakup gets a laugh out of this one and enjoys listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Colder Than You” not only serves as Smith’s first single back on Country radio since 2017, but it also marks his valiant return to his Virginia roots, drawing inspiration from the backcountry-sound of his home state with its traditional Country vibe, simplistic production and expertly crafted lyrics.

Canaan Smith toasts to “Pour Decisions” in clever new song.

The carefree song tells the story of a guy who just got the boot in his relationship, but he has no one to blame but himself and his poor decisions – or rather, his “Pour Decisions.” Written by Smith, along with Corey Crowder, Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley, and Ernest K Smith, the gritty track features an inevitable singalong, as Smith toasts round after round, reminiscing and reveling in the fact that he’s no longer tied down.

“We wrote 'Pour Decisions' down at Brian Kelley's house in Grayton Beach, Florida," says Smith. "It was a total blast -- we even celebrated with a beach party after we finished it. Hope people have as good of a time listening to it as we did writin’ it."

Country Boy Things - Available Now!

CS-CBT-Cover-v2.jpg

Canaan Smith flexes backroad muscle in his brand-new track, “Country Boy Things,” another full throttle blast of energy.

Standing tall as an unapologetic chest-thumper, “Country Boy Things” has a single, anthemic focus – paying respect to the blue-collar Joes of the world who know exactly who they are and what they’re about.

Co-written by Smith with Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley, Jaren Johnston of The Cadillac Three and Corey Crowder, the tune’s loud-and-proud guitars, hard-charging drums, and roughneck lyrics celebrate country-living and backwoods essentials – from muddy tires and bonfire hangouts to working hard and having an independent spirit.

“This song reminds me of moving to Nashville – when those four-on-the-floor songs were making a comeback,” says Smith. “I’m proud of the way the band came together and made this one burn. Banjo, baby!”

Canaan Smith may not be a weatherman, but I sure like where his forecast is going.

According to Smith, it looks like we’re heading into the second half of summer with the perfect balance of sunshine and cold ones in his “Beer Drinkin’ Weather.” The song is Smith’s first release as the flagship artist on Round Here Records, the label started by Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley.

Smith co-wrote the new tune with Hubbard, Kelley and Corey Crowder. The video directors were Thomas Heney and Adam Romaine, and it was shot all over Holmdel, NJ, Mansfield, MA and Camden, NJ when Smith and Florida Georgia Line were out on their Can’t Say I Ain’t Country tour.

Canaan Smith Storms Back Into The Spotlight With New Song “Beer Drinkin' Weather”

CS-NewsItem-BDW.png

NASHVILLE, TENN. (August 15, 2019) — PLATINUM-certified hitmaker CANAAN SMITH storms back onto the Country scene today (8/15), predicting buzzy good vibes and can’t-bring-me-down fun with his new song, “BEER DRINKIN’ WEATHER.”

Featuring a maxed-out mix of cans-up Country and hard vibing party Rock, the up-tempo track was co-written by Smith with Florida Georgia Line superstars Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard plus chart-topping Tree Vibez Music writer Corey Crowder. All about taking life as it comes and making the most of any situation, it showcases his new, elevated mindset – and the beginning of a whole new creative chapter. Also co-produced by Smith with longtime friends Kelley and Hubbard, “BEER DRINKIN’ WEATHER” stands as a true live-for-the-moment anthem, filled with positivity and do-it-my-way edge.

“I always love a drinkin’ song, and this one here is a double-fister!” shares Smith. “I really like how we approached it musically – just a live band in a room with a whole lotta energy. I hope people crank this song way up and it makes ‘em thirsty for a good time.”

Stream or download CANAAN SMITH’S “BEER DRINKIN’ WEATHER” here.

Just announced as the first artist signed to Kelley and Hubbard’s newly-formed label, ROUND HERE RECORDS, Smith will also celebrate his resurgence with an expanded role on Florida Georgia Line’s party of the summer – the ongoing CAN’T SAY I AIN’T COUNTRY TOUR. So far, the sold-out run has found Smith keeping massive crowds energized in between sets by Dan + Shay, Morgan Wallen and HARDY, but fans have been calling for more, and now Smith’s stepping up with a full band performance of his own.

All this follows Smith’s romantically-charged breakout in 2014 with the PLATINUM #1 hit, “Love You Like That,” and his acclaimed Top 5 album debut from 2015, BRONCO. The undeniable talent went on to tour internationally, releasing a handful of other singles, including 2017’s “This Night Back,” which has tallied 30+ million digital streams.

There’s more big news and even more new music just over the horizon, so keep your eyes on the sky.

Florida Georgia Line Launch Round Here Records With Flagship Artist Canaan Smith: Exclusive

As Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley continue to expand their business interests, the pair has founded Round Here Records. The label’s flagship artist is Canaan Smith.

“The label started with a passion to create music and to make records,” Hubbard tells Billboard via phone. “It happened organically [as] we continued to find the artists and friends that we love, believe in and thought had a gift and talent that we wanted to try to nurture. It turned into something that we are really excited about. [We’re] trying to do some trailblazing in this record label space.”

Last year Smith signed to Tree Vibez Music – the duo’s publishing arm founded in 2015 – and Kelley says the pair have believed in him for years as a songwriter and artist. Previously signed to Mercury Records Nashville, Smith saw success in 2015 with his second single, “Love You Like That,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart.
